India is among top 12 destinations for Biotechnology in the world, with approximately 3% share in the global Biotechnology industry,
poised for growth as a key contributor of India’s 45tn economy target by 2024. India plays a key role on global vaccine market contributing nearly
70% of WHO’s vaccines of essential Immunization Schedule (DPT, BCG, measles vaccines). Already, India is an essential player in the manufacturing of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Today, in India there are more than 350 Biotechnology companies providing employment to over 20,000 scientists. Keeping in view of the tremendous potential of employment
in Biotechnology sector in the country, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India is facilitating the establishment of
Skill Vigyan Centres under its DBT Skill Vigyan State Partnership Program in Life Science and Biotechnology.
The objective of program is to provide high-quality hands-on training of tools and techniques to Biotechnology students in multidisciplinary areas of Biotechnology to
make the young biotechnologist ready to take-up jobs in industries, hospitals, medical colleges, R&D laboratories, diagnostic laboratories.
Initially, the program is being implemented in partnership with Six States: 1) Arunachal Pradesh 2) Himachal Pradesh 3) Meghalaya 4) Odisha 5) Punjab 6) Uttarakhand
The Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST) as a nodal agency, in collaboration with five training partner/ institutions in the state is implementing Skill Vigyan project.
In order to implement DBT Skill Vigyan Program in Uttarakhand, the DBT has sanctioned Rs 2.3 Crore to the UCOST for 3 year period. The program would be implemented in collaboration with partner
institutions in the State under certification of Sector Skill Councils such as Life Sciences Sector Skill Development Council(LSSSDC), Agriculture Skill Council of India (ASCI) and Healthcare
Sector Skill Council (HSSC).For imparting skill training, UCOST has roped in five premier academic institutions in Uttarakhand. These include HNB Garhwal (Central) University, Srinagar-Garhwal;
Kumaun University, Bhimtal; GB Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar; GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (NIHE), Almora and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rishikesh.
LSSSDC, ASCI and HSSC will facilitate affiliation of partner institutions; execute Train the Trainer program; and provide the NSQC approved vocational qualifications to the passed students.
Students for various training programs will be selected on the basis of merit/ State level entrance exam.
A monthly stipend of Rs 3,000/- for 12th passed and Rs 5,000/- for BSc Biology/Biotechnology passed students would be paid as Studentship during the course tenure.
Trainee students from across the State will get an opportunity of placement in food, pharmaceutical and beverages industries, hospitals, R&D laboratories in Uttarakhand and neighboring states.
